LG set to release 3 new music based handsets, the GM205, 210 and 310

LG are releasing three music phones aimed at emerging markets; the LG GM310, GM210 and the GM205. The handsets feature Dolby Mobile and LG’s Sound Engine, which tweaks audio based on nine presets depending on the kind of music you’re listening to plus dedicated keys for the music player controls; not particularly unique, but considering the price range we’re expecting these to go for, they’re packing a fair punch.

LG have always had a respectable foot in the mobile music door but I feel these new handsets mark a new attempt to capture some of the market that Sony Ericsson mainly have dominated over recent years. The new devices are quite obviously targeted at the younger crowd as they are expected to be in the mid range to lower price bracket however this is yet to be put on paper.

Anyways back to business…

LG GM205

Starting on the low end, the GM205 candybar features 2.1-channel audio, a 2 megapixel camera, and memory expansion to 2GB (seems like everything supports microSDHC these days, so this is a bit of a disappointment even in the lower market segments).

LG GM210

Next on show is the GM210 which switches over to a slider design and ups the expandability to a generous 4GB and supports USB 2.0. Like the 205 it also sports a 2 megapixel camera however no 2.1 channel speakers?

LG GM310

Finally we have the LG GM310 which moves on from the 210 but keeps a similar slide form factor. It has 512 MB or 1 GB internal memory and support for up to 32 GB microSD cards so already you can tell which phone will be at the forefront of this new launch. 32 GB’s is more than enough for your many playlists. There’s even a 3.5 mm audio jack for compatibility with your favourite headphones. The GM310 also sports an upgraded 3.15 megapixel camera with autofocus and Bluetooth 2.1. It has a touch-sensitive navigation panel with dedicated music keys, located under the 2.2″ display with QVGA resolution. On the connectivity side, the LG GM310 offers tri-band GSM and dual-band HSDPA for up to 1.8 Mbps downlink speeds!

The phones will initially be released in emerging markets in Asia and Latin America, including Mexico and Brazil. After that they will inevitably move down to other markets launching in 30 countries in total. There is no definitive word on pricing yet but as I mentioned we believe they should be lower to midrange market price-wise.

The LG Watch Phone

LG Electronics, a worldwide leader in mobile communications, recently showed off its new innovative ‘Watch Phone’! at Mobile World Congress 2009. It is the world’s first market-ready Touch Watch Phone (LG-GD910) with 3G Video Telephony, 3G VT Service and GSM Quadband Network with sophisticated philosophy of ‘Simple & Easy connectivity’ by applying the world’s best wireless technology merged with miniaturisation and large scale integration technologies.

During the exhibition, LG held live demonstrations to show how the phone can be used to make video calls. This is a unique feature among watch phones and shows how advanced LG’s wearable mobile really is.

This chic, wearable phone is a follow-up to the prototype that LG introduced in 2008 and includes a number of upgrades, such as a full touchscreen interface, 3G capabilities and video calling thanks to a tiny little camera in the top right hand corner; now LG have said this will be able to take photos as well but as you can imagine the camera quality wont exactly be top notch, however its still pretty amazing. Most importantly, this watch phone will actually be available for purchase.

“Our new 3G Touch Watch Phone is stylish, sophisticated and the height of technology, but it’s also undeniably fun. How else can you re-enact those scenes from your favourite sci-fi or spy movie?” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG is the first company to introduce a mobile phone with the wearable device technology. We will continue to develop category-creating products to form a new market, based on our technological leadership and design capability.”

At first glance, LG’s new Watch Phone appears to simply be a high-end timepiece. The company used materials and stylistic elements found in watches from top manufacturers to ensure that people will be comfortable wearing it for any occasion. My first thought as im sure others will agree is that the phone must be an amazing eye sore with so many high end features however as you can see it is actually beautifully crafted. I had it at around 3 or 4 times the size after first reading about it but LG have once again outdone themselves and the competition. The Watch Phone elegance comes from it’s curved tempered glass face, high quality metal casing and slight frame which is a mere 13.9mm thick.

The Watch Phone is as technologically advanced as it is stylish. It is the first touch watch phone in the world to feature 7.2 Mbps 3G HSDPA compatibility, enabling high-speed data transmission and video phone calls using the built-in camera. LG did not sacrifice functionality in favour of size and the Watch Phone is fully capable of sending text messages (via a virtual T9 keyboard), making phone calls, and, of course, keeping accurate time. This is all achieved using the phone’s touchscreen interface on its 3.63cm (1.43-inch) screen and LG’s intuitive Flash Interface.

Voice recognition features, which can be used with or without a Bluetooth headset, make it easier to place calls and look up contacts. Text to Speech (TTS) reads text messages and other information out loud for even greater convenience. The phone also includes stereo Bluetooth and a built-in speaker for playing back MP3 music files. The sound coming from the speakers on the watch is surprisingly loud, though i still would suggest using a headset for taking calls or listening to music etc as holding your wrist to the side of your head does look a little too secret agent. We’ve been told there is 70MB of storage inside, but that could change by the time the device launches as could a number of things.

The charging pins are on the underside of the watch, which can then be connected to a mains charger if I had to hazard a guess like any other phone. The strap can also be adjusted quite easily, which I think is a simple yet strong selling point as its all well and good creating a tiny little wrist phone masterpiece but it becomes completely redundant if nobody can wear it. On the right side of the watch are three buttons: the Talk, Clear and End buttons, respectively which is obviously similar to most LG handsets on today’s market.

The phone will be available in Europe at the end of this year. It’ll be available in a range of colours, from black and silver to blue, red and even pink. Orange will be the first to bring the Watch Phone across its European footprint later this year however pricing is still yet to be announced, I imagine this is due to the lack of knowledge concerning the final features that will be available on the device. The Watch/Phone has without questions exceeding all expectations and has set new heights for both its respectful markets.

Introducing the Sony Ericsson W995!

The latest phone to be announced by Sony Ericsson as you may have already seen from a recent blog post is the new Sony Ericsson W995, the ultimate in mobile media. Not only does it follow the illustrious ways of the cyber-shot range boasting an 8.1 megapixel camera to take on the likes of its step brother the ever popular C905 but it also has Sony Ericsson’s walkman capabilities, making it the first of its kind, bringing media applications together in one stylish, pocket friendly device.

This week I was lucky enough to get my hands on the W995 and I have to say, I think I’ve found my next phone. So first things first, what does it look like? Well from the images you can see that it is basically a shrunken version of the C905 with all purpose slide action but has a more ‘walkmany’ feel, with the characteristics and exterior design of maybe the W880 with dedicated walkman and music buttons. It weighs in at a mere 113g making it extremely light weight considering everything it is packing. It is in no way touch screen which will probably split peoples opinions, however it does have accelerometer and all the latest 3g gadgets such as geo-tagging, Wi-Fi, motion sensors and of course, HSDPA for fast browsing and downloading which does include YouTube luckily.

The main talking point of the W995 is obviously the new culmination of all things fun, be it camera/video, music or even game based, the W995 seems to blow the competition away. The 8.1 MP camera is sharp and precise, it captures colour like any good Cyber-shot should, either close up or from distance. The zoom function allowed me to look at things from some distance with a fair bit of detail however I would advise keeping it just short of fully zoomed as it will tend to get a tad hazy. The camera also boasts features such as face detection, image stabiliser etc and the video recording capabilities are no joke either with 30 frames per second and a secondary lens for video calling.

As for the music side of things, the W at the beginning of its name is really all that you need to know. If you’ve had any experience with a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone before, you know the amazing level of control and adaptability you have with its new 4.0 player, SenseMe and ShakeMe controls plus TrackID recognition. The sound as you would expect is also as good as you will find anywhere, either through the loudspeaker or via the 3.5mm headphone jack placed quite neatly on the top of the handset.

Lastly I think the games on this mobile need a special mention. When I picked up the W995 I knew what I should expect; great handling, yes; easy navigation, obviously, great camera and music features, definitely! But the proverbial cherry had to be the amount of high quality games already downloaded. Two of my personal favourites would have to be ‘Real Football’ which I couldn’t get enough of once I worked out the fairly basic controls… 2-1 England, lovely strike by crouch from outside the box (just a side note, ignore if you have no clue what I’m talking about) and ‘Guitar Rock Tour’ Sony Ericsson’s version of guitar hero which is very easy to get the hang of and is very addictive which im sure anyone who has played the real thing would whole heartedly agree with.

I was going to say that the Sony Ericsson W995 looks set to be a great addition to the Cyber-shot and Walkman families but in hindsight I think this handset will actually be the corner stone of the two genres finally combining and not the end but the putting to one side of either or, with the W995 you can have both! I personally love this mobile as I’m sure you could tell from this glowing review, with an excellent camera and more than enough going for it in other departments too I’m sure this handset will be a massive hit.

Nokia has unveiled three new models of their XpressMusic series. The Nokia 5030, 5330 and 5730 XpressMusic handsets have been unveiled prior to their official introduction later this week.

These particular handsets should appeal to people who care a lot about playing music on their cell phones.

Nokia unveiled the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic model, which targets the social networking market by offering a full sliding keyboard. This model runs for $355.

Nokia 5330 XpressMusic will be arriving in Q3 with a sticker price of $230. It has a light feature for ravers.

The Nokia 5030 is aimed at emerging markets, and offers a music-capable phone for a moderate price.

“Additional launches, including Italy, Sweden and Mexico, are planned for the coming several months,” Nokia said in a statement.

HTC Magic coming to Vodafone soon

Vodafone has announced at the MWC that it will soon be launching the second Android Smartphone known as the HTC Magic. The HTC Magic looks a lot like the T-Mobile G1 but it will be missing out on the physical QWERTY keyboard that was found on the G1. It will also come with a new firmware known as the Cupcake.

Philips Xenium X520 supports AAA Batteries

Philips has announced a new Xenium device known as X520, which provides power backup using standard lithium AAA batteries. Philips is not really renowned for making high end mobile devices but it does introduce devices that provide more battery power than any other mobile devices available in the market. The X520 itself supports up to 8 hours of talk time and up to a month of standby time but thanks to a new technology called 'Backupower', it can provide up to 2.5 hours of additional talk time and up to one week of additional standby time with a standard lithium AAA battery.

The Samsung F268 has been rated as the greenest phone in the world by Greenpeace. Greenpeace has recently conducted a research on a number of handsets including Samsung's F268, Motorola's V9, Nokia's 3110 Evolve, Sony Ericsson's C905 and LG's KT520 and it has found out that Samsung's F268 surpassed its rivals in terms of being the most environment friendly handset. Greenpeace also appreciated Samsung's efforts in developing environment friendly materials for electronic devices that can be recycled or reused.

Just to recap, Samsung F268 is manufactured free of BFR and PVC materials. Both BFRs and PVC cause a threat to the environment and their usage is prohibited by environment protection agencies. It also comes with an alarm function that alerts the user to turn off the charger when battery is fully charged.

Universal Cell Phone Charger Planned

Major cell phone makers are moving towards the announcement of a universal cell phone charger, which will make life easier for cell phone owners. Right now most cell phone makers develop proprietary charges that work only with their phones.

The current initiative is backed by Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Orange, 3, AT&T and Vodafone.

They say the new re-charger will be very green, and could help reduce the environmental damage of current chargers by a significant amount.

“By supporting this industry initiative on common charging solutions, and enabling consumers to choose if they need a charger with every new device or can re-use existing ones, we can contribute further in improving the industry’s environmental footprint,” Nokia said in a statement.

The idea wasn’t necessarily that of the phone manufacturers. The European Commission has been pressuring them to make this decision for years.

Pennsylvania Considering Cell Phone Ban While Driving

Pennsylvania may be the next state to make using a hand held cell phone while behind the wheel of a car illegal.

State representative, John Shapiro (D), has re-introduced a bill that will punish drivers for double-tasking with a hand held phone while driving.

The ban would prohibit hand held cell phone use on all public roads of the Keystone state. Those exempt from the proposed ban include law enforcement officials, mass transit drivers and emergency vehicle operators.

John Shapiro said, “We will save lives on our roadways by simply disconnecting Pennsylvania drivers from their hand-held cell phones.”

If the bill is passed, drivers caught using a hand held phone will be imposed with a $50.00 fine, but no points will be assessed on their Driver’s license.

In July 2008, California and the state of Washington implemented law that prohibits text messaging and/or using a hand held cell phone while driving. In California, a first offense will cost a driver $20.00, but a swinging scale increases the fine for repeated offenses. In Washington, tickets cost a driver $124.00.

Google Android Samsung Phone Delayed

Samsung had been planning on introducing a new phone featuring Google’s Android operating system, but that has been put on hold for the immediate future.

Initial reports said Samsung would release its Android device some time in the second quarter of 2009, but according to an article in The Guardian, the head of marketing at Samsung’s mobile division, Younghee Lee, said the company is “planning internally” for a release in the second half of the year. Lee added that Samsung is in negotiations with a number of operators to bring its Android device to market.

Samsung is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to clarify news about the phone.

When LG first got tongues wagging with their new S-Class 3D interface, all we really wanted was a sneak peek at the all new UI in action. And it seems LG have been listening, releasing a demo video of the new LG KM900 Arena in full swing to coincide with the phones official announcement at the MWC 2009 event in Barcelona. While i won’t bore you with the details (as you can take a look for yourself), what i will say is if the finished LG Arena runs anywhere near as smoothly as this video suggests, we may have found a new touchscreen king. Samsung UltraTOUCH S8300 will come to Russia

The Russian division of Samsung Electronics also introduced a new phone Samsung UltraTOUCH. It expects the company, Samsung UltraTOUCH become "the hero" of Mobile World Congress, thanks to new technological design and touch screen.

LG Arena 3D interface: tantalising first look

After the first leaked image and speculative details about the LG KM900 Arena surfaced last week, the really interesting aspect was the possibility of an all new UI called a 3D interface. With no more information to go on, every man and his dog was playing the guessing game as to how this will actually take shape in the finished article. Until now that is. The latest image of the LG Arena to leak from LG clearly shows an active screen showing off the “3D Interface” which resembles a cross between the iPhone 3G and the Sony Ericsson Xperia with its innovative Panel interface.

Though this is just an assumption, it would appear that the Rubik’s Cube style icon in the middle of the touchscreen features different sub menus on each side such as the media gallery which appears in the leaked image. Navigating through the sides of the cube by swiping your finger across the touch screen should allow you to access different areas of the Arena, whilst the four icons at the bottom (Call, messaging etc.) remain ever present regardless of which side you are looking at.

Though all we have to go on is one leaked image, the new 3D interface certainly looks promising. In the end it will all be down to the execution but the LG Arena certainly puts an interesting new spin on the iPhone style multi windowed menu. Set to be officially announced this week, keep an eye on the Blog for any further developments.

All four devices are scheduled to be launched in association with Verizon Wireless in 2009. Orb have just released a $10 iPhone version of their media streamer for the iPhone; allowing users with a Windows PC capable of tuning into television, to stream broadcasts straight to their iPhones over wifi/3g/edge

This is a nice little idea that could let you keep up with your favorite shows while on the move, or even if you just can't be bothered to get out of bed!

An inexpensive new piece of software exploits the iPhone and iPod Touch"s new ability to download over-the-air podcasts. It"s now a way to watch TV on Apple"s lovely mobile screen. The program is called--wait for it--Television.

Joel Evans of Geek.com took Television for a test drive and liked it a lot; check out his first look here. The $2.99 program, available at the App Store, is said to make it possible to see 50 shows from 30 different channels in the United States, the UK, France and Germany. Find the list here. At least some of what you can download looks like snippets and highlights rather than complete programs.

Pantech Slate C530: ‘World’s Thinnest Device’?

For some, cell phones are more for text messaging than talking. For those who subscribe to the textaholic camp, AT&T has a number of text messaging-friendly cell phones with the Pantech Slate C530 as one of its standouts.

AT&T claims that the Slate is the “world’s thinnest device”. AT&T complemented the release of the Pantech Slate at the end of 2008 with three other text-friendly cell phones: the AT&T Quickfire, Samsung Propel and Pantech Matrix.

The Pantech Slate measures in at 0.39 of an inch thin.

The Sony Ericsson W350, by the way, claims to be the “thinnest flip phone available” today. By contrast, the Sony Ericsson W350 is 0.41 of an inch thin (or 10.5 millimeters).

As for the popularity of texting, studies say the majority of people have never texted before. For those who do, though, many are rabid texters.

A Nielsen study revealed that U.S. consumers now use their cell phones for text messaging more often than for talking. To make that statement, 50,000 people were queried who were thought to represent the average U.S. cell phone population.

The data, which was gathered in the second quarter of 2008, revealed that on average each user sends 357 texts a month versus 204 voice calls.

Nokia N85 and N79 Released in the U.S.

Nokia has started selling the N85 and N79 in the United States, available unlocked through the Nokia Flagship stores in New York and Chicago, online and from independent retailers.

Both devices integrate a 5.0-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash to capture high-quality images and video clips at 30 frames per second.
Photos can be geotagged to record the capture location and shared online on sites like Share on Ovi or Flickr.
They have ample storage space included inbox for favorite tunes - an 8GB microSD card on the N85 and a 4GB microSD card on the N79. A built-in FM transmitter lets users enjoy music wirelessly through a car or home stereo.

They come with Nokia Maps for pedestrian and voice-guided navigation, free maps for more than 200 countries, satellite view and close to 15 million points of interest.

Consumers can play N-Gage games with players from across the globe. The N85 and N79 are compatible with high-speed 3G HSDPA networks in the US (850 and 1900 MHz). The N85 additionally supports European 3G networks (2100 MHz).

Nokia Launches Free Email Account

Mail on Ovi, Nokia's free email account, has launched today and can be set up directly on Nokia phones.

Users with Nokia Series 40 devices can create email address on their handsets. The Ovi email account has features typical to PC-based email accounts.

"Mail on Ovi is the first-ever email service which allows people to create an account directly on their mobile phone," said Tom Furlong, Senior Vice President of Nokia. "Rather than focusing purely on push email, we are mobilizing email across Nokia's mainstream device portfolio."

Consumers will be able to choose from 12 languages based on the settings of their device, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Bengali, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia.

BlackBerry Curve 8320 for AT&T launched

Months after being launched by T-Mobile USA, AT&T has finally managed to grab Reserch in Motion's Wi-fi-enabled BlackBerry Curve 8320 just in time for Christmas.

The BlackBerry Curve features a 320x240 display, 2.0 megapixel camera with built-in flash and 5x digital zoom, all major audio support, MPEG4, H.263 support video support, microSD card slot and light-sensing technology.

Other features included in the Curve 8320 are: 3.5mm headset jack, full QWERTY keyboard, stereo Bluetooth with A2DP and an HTML browser.

AT&T will be selling the BlackBerry Curve 8320 for $499.99 with without a contract or for $249.99 (the exact price T-Mobile is selling it for) with a new 2 year contract. A $100 mail-in rebate is also available, bringing the price down to a $199.

The Samsung M8800 was introduced in Europe as an 8 megapixel camera phone. It's pretty much a digital camera with a cellular phone which is quite different to having a phone with a camera. Why is it different? Because Samsung M8800L Pixon 8 megapixel camera phone takes really clear and crisp pictures that you won't even believe those photos are taken by a camera phone and not a real digital camera!

Since it arrived in Europe, the M8800 is like a dream, so close to having it but you just can't have it... at least not yet. Now, thanks to AT&T the Samsung M8800 is going to the U.S. as the Samsung M8800L. It has AT&T 3G and has 850 MHz and 1900 MHz WDCMA bandwidth which is what sets it apart from the Europe's M8800 version.

It was rumored before that Samsung M8800 will be going to the U.S. in partnership with T-Mobile so don't be shocked to find out it's not under T-Mobile, after all it was just a rumor. Hopefully AT&T will be giving a good price for this mobile phone so more Americans can afford it. No word as to how much it would cost yet so we better stay tuned.

Vertu Boucheron 150 Crafted from Solid Gold

Luxury mobile phone maker Vertu has teamed up with French jewellery house Boucheron to create the Vertu Boucheron 150, a limited edition mobile phone built from solid gold.

Prepared in celebration of Boucheron's 150th anniversary, the Vertu Boucheron 150 is crafted from individual solid gold ingots taking over 1000 man hours to cut to shape, with over 700 man hours of hand polishing followed by 500 hours of hand building.

The concave sapphire crystal keypad is intricately designed with 400 points, providing the toughest of challenges for the most skilled of craftsmen. The constantly changing angled surfaces allow a cut stone appearance, inspired by the clearly faceted stones which are part of Boucheron's core craft.

The Boucheron 150 was created to reflect both brands. The Vertu V-shape morphs into random proportioned patterns and directions of the three sided surfaces creating a blend of Vertu and Boucheron elements. It gains a visual sparkle not from precious stones but instead through pure form and line achieved with precious faceted metal.

The Boucheron 150 is housed in a bespoke hand-made wooden case by Reuge, the market leading Swiss makers of artisan music boxes. The box has a custom-built brass music drum that plays the signature Vertu sandpiper ringtone upon opening.

"Using the Vertu Signature platform, but taking it away from the core design and creating a visibly stunning statement that breaks all expectations of mobile phone design, resulting in a true piece of sculpture," said Frank Nuovo, Principal Designer of Vertu.

The Vertu Boucheron 150 will cost $30,000 and be on display at the recently launched Vertu store in London starting November 19, before a showcase tour at Vertu stores in Paris, Milan and Tokyo.

Sporting a classy iced white colour scheme and effortlessly showing off the slide out QWERTY keyboard mechanism, the most interesting aspect is, unsurprisingly, the 3.5 inch touchscreen. If the finished article is any where near as quick and responsive as this clip suggests then Nokia are surely on to a winner with the N97.
